Previously mentioned, one of the major advantages of Zotero is its multi-platform synchronization. Zotero provides users with 300MB of free synchronization space, but this space quickly runs out when synchronizing documents.
Jianguo Cloud provides free users with 1GB of monthly upload traffic and 3GB of download traffic. It also allows third-party applications to access its services through the WebDAV protocol, providing free cloud storage for backing up data from other software.
This article explains how to backup attachments from the Zotero client to Jianguo Cloud by configuring the synchronization function, avoiding the embarrassment of running out of free cloud space in Zotero and being unable to synchronize documents across multiple devices.
Registering a Zotero Account#
After installing Zotero, go to "Preferences" -> "Sync"
Click on "Create Account" and you will be redirected to the registration webpage. Fill in the required information to register an account.
After registering, log in to the web interface and you will find that Zotero has a web version of the document library, which has a similar interface and layout to the client.
Open the "Settings" page under the username tab in the upper right corner to configure your account's personal information. However, the most important part in this article is the last tab in the settings page, "Storage".
Zotero's Synchronization Space#
In Zotero Storage, you can see that Zotero provides 300MB of free synchronization space for each registered user. You can upgrade to a larger synchronization space by purchasing a plan.
Zotero's official synchronization space allows you to synchronize your document library between multiple devices and create collaborative libraries to share with others.
Using Jianguo Cloud's WebDAV Service#
Jianguo Cloud is a domestic cloud storage service. Unlike other cloud drives, Jianguo Cloud has very low free storage space and upload/download traffic. However, it provides WebDAV functionality and allows other applications to access the cloud drive.
After registering and logging in to Jianguo Cloud, go to "Account Information" -> "Security Options" and add the WebDAV service under third-party application management. Click on "Add Application" to generate a password for the corresponding application service.
After configuring, you will obtain the server address, account, and generated application password. Fill in the corresponding information in Zotero's synchronization settings page (fill in the Jianguo Cloud "Account" line for the username).
Clearing Used Cloud Space in Zotero's Cloud#
Go back to Zotero Storage's settings page and click on "Purge Storage in My Library" at the bottom.
After a while, refresh the page and you will see that the current usage is cleared. At this point, the data information in Zotero is still saved in the cloud, but the documents are saved in Jianguo Cloud's Zotero folder through the WebDAV functionality.
Note that when installing Zotero on other devices, you still need to correctly configure the WebDAV service in the settings to ensure proper synchronization. The configuration process is similar to the one mentioned above and will not be further explained.
